The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire is a British order of chivalry, rewarding contributions to the arts and sciences, work with charitable and welfare organisations, and public service outside the civil service. It was established on 4 June 1917 by King George V and comprises five classes across both civil and military divisions, the most senior two of which make the recipient either a knight if male or dame if female. There is also the related British Empire Medal, whose recipients are affiliated with, but not members of, the order. Recommendations for appointments to the Order of the British Empire were initially made on the nomination of the United Kingdom, the self-governing Dominions of the Empire (later Commonwealth) and the Viceroy of India. Nominations continue today from Commonwealth countries that participate in recommending British honours. Most Commonwealth countries ceased recommending appointments to the Order of the British Empire when they created their honours. The five classes of appointment to the Order are, from highest grade to lowest grade: Knight Grand Cross or Dame Grand Cross of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (GBE) Knight Commander or Dame Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (KBE or DBE) Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (CBE) Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE) Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE) BEM The British empire medal is not included in the Order but is a reward for local community work and is presented by local dignitaries (BEM) Investures take place at either Windsor Castle, Buckingham Palace or in Edinburgh Holyrood The British honours system rewards individuals with Honours, Decorations and Medals in public recognition of their merit, service or bravery. Honours are announced and awarded twice a year by His Majesty The King, with lists consisting of knights and dames, appointments to the Order of the British Empire, and gallantry and bravery awards. Different awards are received depending on an individual's achievements. What is the Order of the British Empire? Perhaps the most well-known awards are classes of appointment to the Order of the British Empire. Instituted in 1917 by George V, the awards were created during World War I to reward services to the war effort by people not on the front line. However, they are now awarded to civilians as well as members of the armed forces. They include (in order of precedence): GBE, KBE or DBE (Knight or Dame) - Knight or Dame of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire CBE - Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire OBE - Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire MBE - Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire #MBE #investiture #windsorcastle #royalfamily #kingcharles #knighthood #medals #britisharmy, #kingsbirthday #corononation #The Coronation of The King
