Sepoy Khudadad Khan was born on October 20, 1888, in Chakwal, now part of Pakistan. He joined the 129th Duke of Connaught's Own Baluchis, a regiment of the British Indian Army, during World War I. Khudadad Khan served as a machine gunner. His moment of glory came during the First Battle of Ypres on October 31, 1914. Despite being severely wounded, he bravely operated his machine gun, providing crucial cover for his fellow soldiers under intense enemy fire. His actions saved many lives. In recognition of his extraordinary courage, Sepoy Khudadad Khan became the first South Asian and Muslim soldier to receive the Victoria Cross, the highest military decoration in the British Empire. King George V presented him with the medal on June 8, 1915, at Buckingham Palace. After the war, Khudadad Khan returned to his village in Chakwal and lived a quiet life. He passed away on March 8, 1971, at the age of 82. His legacy stands as a testament to the contributions and sacrifices made by soldiers from the Indian subcontinent during World War I.
