India is a country of excess and the diversity of beliefs guides the steps of its people. For several generations, Tenzin and his family have grown peas, a demanding crop. During the harvest, he goes down every morning with his mules along dizzying ravines. In the state of Meghalaya, the men of the Jaintia tribe must carry a trunk weighing several tons to the center of the village without ever putting it on the ground: for them, failure would herald a year of misfortune. The Khasis preserve nature by building bridges without using cement. Elsewhere, bamboo cutters make rafts and, with only the gods and rushing currents as guides, hope to arrive safely.
