People of the Island (ft Danny Leviñanco) | Science Stories

Danny Leviñanco is an educator from Chuit Island, in the commune of Chaitén. She is a member of an international science team working to understand the impact of a 2008 volcanic eruption that dramatically altered the landscape and continues to impact the people living in the region today. While the eruption’s terrestrial impacts have been well documented, the #EruptionArchive expedition is the first exploration of the impacts on the surrounding marine environments. Leviñanco helped facilitate a record number of outreach events during her time on Falkor (too), with nine ship-to-shore and a special outreach day with almost 100 local school children visiting the ship to learn about the science happening offshore from their homes. She is eager to inspire the younger generations in her communities to pursue professional studies.
