The Order of Sion is believed to be dedicated to the mystical bloodline of Jesus and Mary Magdalene and the sacred teachings passed down to their descendants, and is credited with creating the Knights Templar. But did the Order of Sion really exist? How was it created? Were its members initiated into ancient secret knowledge, mysteries and spiritual beliefs? The Order of Sion is shrouded in mystery and not much is known about it. Because of the limited and conflicting information about it, its very existence has long been doubted, and the alleged activities it engaged in are often overlooked. In fact, if the idea of true secret societies was to remain secret, then apparently the Order of Sion followed this course of action for most of its existence. This secret brotherhood gained attention and fame only a few decades ago, in 1982, after it was featured in several books and documentaries, including the book The Holy Blood and the Holy Grail by researcher Michael Baigent and The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown. Also known as the Prieure de Sion, this old and highly influential order has been led by a series of Grand Masters, including such notables as Leonardo da Vinci, Victor Hugo and Isaac Newton. The emphasized power of the Brotherhood of Sion is due at least in part to the assumption that its members are the end-time guardians of a great secret which, if revealed, would shake the foundations of the Holy Church. But if this order is really so secret, then where does all this information about it come from? The main source of information about the Order of Sion is a series of documents that were deposited in the National Library in Paris in the 1960s and which, taken together, are known as the "Secret Dossiers". Most of the works included there relate to the Merovingian dynasty and revolve around the famous mystery of Rennes-le-Château. Rennes-le-Château is a small village in the south of France, in the Languedoc region, which became famous in 1885 when the priest Beranger Saunier discovered old scrolls in the local church that contained a valuable secret - Saunier had discovered documents of a secret brotherhood called the Order of Sion, charged with the task of guarding the offspring of Jesus Christ. The first work of the secret files was deposited in 1964, although it dates from 1956, and the last is from 1967. Perhaps these "Secret Files" would seem like fictional nonsense, but in fact the scale of the work to create them and the sources cited in them to support their claims lend credibility. Even the French writer Gérard de Sède, who has devoted much time to disproving the alleged Merovingian evidence given in the secret files, admits that the scientific and academic resources and studies that have gone into them are disproportionately large and significant. He concludes that there is a real mystery behind it. Another interesting feature of the files is the persistent impression that their authors had access to official government and police records. The history of the Secret Files became even more shrouded in mystery when, in 1967, the collection was supplemented with a new pamphlet entitled Le serpent rouge. It is attributed to three authors - Pierre Fauger, Louis Saint Maxand and Gaston de Coquet. The brochure was published on January 17, 1967., although the form for its deposit in the National Library is dated February 15. This 13-page text is filled with astrological, allegorical and alchemical symbolism. The most sinister part of the whole story, however, is the fact that the three alleged authors were found hanged within 24 hours of each other on March 6-7 of the same year.
