On Thursday, thousands marched in Athens, Greece, to protest legislation that would cut pensions and raise taxes. Parliament was debating passing legislation in order to allow for another bailout deal, meant to alleviate the country’s debt. Some protesters turned violent, hurling petrol bombs at police, who fired back with tear gas. Late Thursday night, the parliament passed the legislation. Greece’s Deputy Finance Minister told lawmakers, “This is the only road map that guarantees ... the country's exit from the great Greek recession."
