A recent report shows that a China-based cyber spying network has been systematically stealing hundreds of confidential documents in India. Those include classified files from the Indian Defense Ministry—and even a year’s worth of personal emails from the Dalai Lama.

The report, released Monday, is called Shadows in the Cloud. The authors are Canadian and U.S. researchers.

They believe some of the spies are based in Chengdu, the capital of China’s Sichuan province—but it’s unclear whether they’re sponsored by the Chinese regime.

Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu has categorically denied any government involvement.

The researchers have been monitoring the China-based spy operation for the past eight months. It’s a continuation of an investigation they released in the spring of 2009. That investigation had uncovered another cyber espionage network, also based in China.
